Bosnia eye hat-trick as Golden League approaches

Bosnia & Herzegovina are the undisputed favourites for a third title in a row in as many editions of the European Sitting Volleyball Men’s Golden Nations League as the 2023 event is about to start this weekend in Balikesir in the Turkish Marmara region, about 280 kilometres southwest of Istanbul.

Bosnia & Herzegovina have won both previous editions of the competition, taking gold in the inaugural Golden League in 2021 in Assen, The Netherlands and defending that title last year when they hosted the event in Sarajevo.

Bosnia & Herzegovina’s Armin Sehic and Dzevad Hamzic put up a double block to try and stop Croatia’s Edvin Zionica in action from last year’s Golden Nations League.

The reigning champions and multiple Paralympic and World gold medallists are up against Croatia and Ukraine, alongside the home Turkish team who are making their Golden League debut this year as hosts, in the four-team event.

None have ever previously won a Golden League medal.

The 2023 Men’s Golden League includes a total of ten matches, with a round-robin pool followed by semifinals and medals matches. It is the first time in the three-year history of the Golden League that the event features a final, after medals were decided in 2021 and 2022 according to pool standings.

Competition begins Friday afternoon with two matches and concludes on Sunday.
