2016 is the year when Sitting Volleyball again is scheduled and athletes gather for national and international venues. 2016 is well underway and the whistle has blown for the establishment of a lasting, broad and engaging Sitting Volleyball environment in Norway.
Historically, Norway can present good results from international competitions of Sitting Volleyball. One of the highlights was when Norway in 1985 hosted the World Cup on home grounds. HM Harald, who was crown prince at the time, ceremoniously opened the championship, and watched the Norwegian athletes defeat England in their opening match 3-0! There were entanglements and delays when one of the teams arrived Kristiansund instead of host city Kristiansand. Finally, all games were played and Norway was noted with an honorable 5th place in the championship. Norway is again displaying a top motivated and more experienced team for Paralympics in Atlanta 1996. The team goes all the way to the finals, which they unfortunately loose under dramatic circumstances against Iran’s national team.
Empirically, there is a big misconception for people who are not so familiar with Para sport that it can only be played by people with a physical disability. Unless you want to compete at a high international level, everyone can play, regardless of age, ability or gender. The beauty of all disciplines of Para Volley (Sit, – and standing Volleyball, Sitting, – and standing Beach Volleyball) is that on the grassroots level they are fully integrated. This simply means that athletes with and without physical disabilities can compete side by side at the same venue.
Sitting Volleyball is an exciting and fast-paced activity for absolute ALL and everyone. An activity that offers challenges and creates a sense of achievement. It requires no special skill in volleyball to start playing, but you must be able to sit on the floor without support and assistance. All volleyball clubs are encouraged to create a lasting and stable sitting volleyball environment. All clubs providing or require to start volleyball activity are encouraged to contact NVBF. We will contribute in terms of marketing, provision of equipment, – in the form of rods, nets and balls as well as consult, or contribute to the facilitation of access etc. to training venues. A sitting volleyball team will be able to challenge, excite and empower both sitting and standing, with or without any disabilities.
